7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Friday, September 19th, 2025

The Bachelor-Benedict Community Foundation, Inc. is a Washington, D.C. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has as its charitable purposes to provide scholarships to qualified students and investment in youth programs with proven outcomes. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, we were compelled to explore ways that we could focus our charitable efforts to benefit minority youth whose lives and education were disproportionately disrupted in under-resourced Washington metro area communities.

Today we are pleased to continue these efforts. We ask that you support our youth by registering, donating or sponsoring the September 19th golf tournament.  We also have volunteering opportunities.

Dr. George Franklin Grant [1846-1910] was the inventor of the first golf tee as we know it today.  Making a singular inventive achievement with a patent grant in 1899, Dr. Grant, a Dentist and Golf enthusiast solved a worrisome problem for golfers when driving off the ball.  Hand-shaping a mound in sand or soil to tee off was very bothersome.  Grant came up with the idea to fashion a stable device from wood that was tapered to a point at the lower end which was inserted into the ground wherein the upper section was designed in the shape of a cup.  This simple and cheap article of manufacture became universal to golfers, making a welcome shift in the sport saving enormous time and energy.  His contribution to the world of golf immeasurably advanced the game. Dr. George F. Grant, a Dental practitioner, was the second African American graduate at Harvard University and its the first African American professor.  Prototypes of Grant’s Golf tee are on display at the USGA museum in New Jersey.
